Spring: The Season of Renewed Life

EDITORIAL: April 4, 2014 > Spring is considered to be the time of renewal, rejuvenation, rebirth, regrowth and reawakening and most often thought of as occurring during March, April, and May.The temperature begins to warm significantly causing new plant growth to “spring forth,” giving the season its name. Many flowering plants bloom this time of year heralded by the blooming of deciduous perennial plants.

The spring season offers an escape route for families who’ve been trapped indoors all winter.    Celebrate springtime together with activities that help most of us transition from the world of snow and freezing temperature to increased physical activities. This calendar, which had no graphed or written form, marked activities such as hunting, fishing, planting, harvesting and religious rituals.

Easter always falls during the spring as is determined by a procedure promulgated by the church. It is in this context, that as the season changes from barren-looking trees to lovely new and colorful sceneries, it is also a time for us human beings to re-invigorate our spiritual life if need be. I was so inspired and motivated after listening to the man for all seasons during his homily at Fordham University Church last week. He eloquently requested with a soft but convincing voice the assembled invited guests to be great examples of ” shining light of the world”.

His Eminence, Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle of Manila was the homilist. This man has an aura in him of sublime humility and intelligence. He is a true shepherd of the Lord, a holiness that only a real humble servant can show. An example of this virtue, was when he made the statement “that when he looked at the mirror, he questioned his face if he is really a Cardinal and how and why he became one. It is an absurdity” he said” that a face like mine would become a spiritual leader of the Catholic Church.” As we gathered around later on for dinner. it was so hard to recognize him without his red cap and cardinal regalia. He was dressed in his priestly vestments entertaining guests with photo shoots, always smiling and talking to them.

If there is an example of Our Lord Jesus Christ mingling with sinners, this is the man whose spiritual charm and grace can influence us to enlighten our spiritual being. He is a true leader and great Cardinal of the Catholic Church. As seasons change, His Eminence Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle will remain steadfast in his words and works and whose “light of the world” will shine brightly for all seasons for humankind to see.

“Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in every way and [that your body] may keep well, even as [I know] your soul keeps well and prospers.” – 3 John 2
