As many of you knew, I just returned from a long vacation to the Philippines. It was a wonderful trip and I thank many of you who were kind enough to send me messages and well-wishes while I was away. Thanks also to VP Nida Imperial, for looking at the state of our Council while I was away.
It was a pleasure to meet up with Jennifer Rodriguez, MOIMA Chair together with our FECGP Team. Coordinating with MOIMA (Mayor’s Office for Immigrant and Multicultural Affairs) we learned about “Language Access in the Ballot”. This past February, Philadelphia City Council passed a legislation, introduced by Councilwoman María Quiñones Sánchez (7th District) and co-sponsored by Councilman Wilson Goode, Jr, to amend the City Charter to ensure language access. Resolution No. 14074 and Bill No. 14076, to be presented to voters on the May 19th ballot. Language access is becoming more of a necessity as the immigrant population continues to grow. With the Charter amendment, the mayor would be required to designate an entity to assist agencies with drafting and implementing language access plans, and to evaluate their compliance. Language access is very important especially in our city which is so culturally diversed.

We made friends and met new contacts at the AARP Meeting where I met with new PA Gov. Tom Wolf. There is always a lot to learn by attending meetings of AARP and also encouraged by their work among our senior community.
Join us at the forthcoming Healthy Eating Seminar (March 7) sponsored by the PNASNJP. Congratulations to President Lucy de Simone and for her Team for putting this together.
Hoping to see many of you at our monthly meeting this March. Maraming salamat sa inyong lahat and “Mabuhay”!
